In June, Lisbon is decorated for the celebrations of Saint Anthony. The festival involves bonfires and fireworks, the fortunes of the Saint, ritual offerings of carnations and basil bushes, Saint Anthony’s thrones, built by groups of locals and children, and on the eve of the 13th of June, processions of young men and women to water fountains around the city which end with singing and street parties (the most popular of which takes place in the Praça da Figueira). In 1932, the first popular parades took place in Mayer Park. In 1934, they moved to the Praça do Comércio and from 1958 onwards they made their way down to the Avenida da Liberdade.
